Resumo

Ezekiel 13.17-23 is a narrative about women practices and performances with sewing bands on wrists, making veils and binding knots. The narrative presents women as prophetess involved in rituals of life and death. The practice they perform is called divination, and it is condemned, because through it, women arrogate themselves with powers to attribute life and death to people. In addition to the legitimacy of the exercise of prophecy, also the power to designate who may live and dye, or to transit the path between death and life are objects of controversy. This study seeks to work different perspectives with some guiding questions: What is the interpretation history of this text? What are these magical practices, designating life and death? Is this prophecy? The study points to possibilities to rescue some practices of women in the midst of a spectrum of prophetic condemnation and controversy, highlighting the leading role of women in religious practices in borderline situations, such as childbirth, birth and death.
